Rotary Club of Los Angeles to Award $128,000 in Student Scholarships

LOS ANGELES — (May 15, 2013) — The Rotary Club of Los Angeles has announced that it Rotary LA5 logowill award $128,000 in scholarships to 23 college-bound high school students from Los Angeles at a their annual scholarship awards program this Friday, May 17, 2013. Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, Dr. John Deasy, will speak at the lunchtimeceremony at the California Club in downtown Los Angeles.

The Rotary Club of Los Angeles, known as LA5, works with the LAUSD to identify students who have achieved academic distinction while facing tremendous personal challenges.

Dr. Robert Donahue, Co-chair of the LA5 Scholarship Committee, said, “The students receiving scholarships this year are remarkable for their ability to achieve such high academic marks while overcoming great adversity. Their accomplishments are a wonderful reflection of the education they are receiving in the Los Angeles area. The Rotary Club of Los Angeles is proud to support their future academic endeavors.”

In addition to new scholarships presented each year, LA5 continues to fund ongoing 4-year commitments for scholarships awarded in previous years. Since launching the program two decades ago, hundreds of deserving students in Los Angeles have received in excess of $200,000 annually totaling several million dollars in awards.

The Rotary Club of Los Angeles, LA’s leading business and civic organization since 1909, is comprised of 400 of LA’s prominent leaders in business, legal, government, and not-for-profit sectors.
