Surf’s up this weekend, thanks to Hurricane John. But on Monday a big wave of RENT CONTROL will be debated at the Santa Monica Pier, moderated by four term Assemblymember Mike Gatto. Debate starts at 6:30. Free to attend. This is one of the hottest issues of the season as efforts to repeal the Costa-Hawkins Rent Control Act (Proposition 10) is on the November ballot, Apartment owners and others fear that if voters vote yes on 10 it would allow rent control on new construction and single family homes, impacting workforce housing and discouraging owners and developers from building new or maintaining their existing properties. Less places to live = more homelessness and economic slowdown if our fast growing businesses can’t house their workers.
Please join friends from ProCon, the Santa Monica Library, the League of Women Voters and the Arthur Rupe Foundation for a drink at 6 followed by the debate at 6:30 and reception and drinks with the debaters at 7:30. Last Monday’s session on cannabis was smokin’ hot and we had a great turn out of interesting people from across the spectrum of humanity at end of the Santa Monica Pier.
Debate is free to attend, reception is ticketed. Invitation is attached and you can register by clicking here. https://rentcontroldebate.eventbrite.com
