People Media Introduces Disaster Action Team (DAT) Network for American Red Cross Ventura County

DAT MEDIA ADVISORY
Friday, December 14, 2007, 11 - 11:45 a.m.

PRESS BRIEFING AT AMERICAN RED CROSS-VENTURA COUNTY ON DAT –
DISASTER ACTION TEAMS – EMPOWERING CITIZENS TO MASTER DISASTER

CAMARILLO, Calif. – (Dec. 3, 2007) – Ventura County is one of the MOST disaster prone county in California, according to experts in emergency services. Wildfires, earthquakes, floods and other threats make efficient and local disaster response and preparedness a high priority for the county’s American Red Cross. To enhance local preparedness and response, the American Red Cross of Ventura County (ARC-VC) is expanding DAT – its Disaster Action Team network -- within Ventura County’s ten cities, bolstered by an expanded $2 million new communications and training “hub” in Camarillo.

“The rash of recent wildfires and community safety concerns have made area residents aware that we should step up our level of local preparedness. Working with employers, civic organizations and neighborhood groups, we intend to do just DAT,” says Chris Johnson, ARC-VC’s CEO, noting the play on “DAT” as part of a creative strategy to reach more Ventura County residents.

WHO: Press Briefing featuring a top California Office of Emergency Services representative, Ventura County Fire Chief Bob Roper, Ventura County Supervisor Kathy Long, Ventura County Undersheriff Craig Husband and a number of elected and civic leaders from Ventura County’s 10 cities.

WHAT: DAT stands for Disaster Action Team. Team members – all volunteers – are the ones “giving the hugs” at 3 a.m. to those who have just been displaced by a disaster. They are trained in CPR, first aid and some, or all, of the 24 services that Red Cross provides during a disaster response. The goal for this expanded DAT program is to provide self-reliant, trained teams in each community. In the event that a community becomes isolated during a disaster, a DAT will provide aid for a minimum 72 hours, or until other resources become available. All Ventura County citizens will have a stronger comfort level, knowing that trained Red Cross DAT members are among their neighbors.

WHEN: Friday, Dec. 14, 11 a.m., Press Briefing and DAT Lunch

WHERE: The American Red Cross of Ventura County
Betty R. Plotkin Executive Headquarters
836 Calle Plano, Camarillo, Calif.

WHY: The ARC-VC headquarters will be expanded to accommodate additional DAT training and other preparedness initiatives, with $1.2 million funding to date from a variety of individuals and companies and the remaining $800,000 to be raised over the next year through the vital support of donors, civic organizations and corporate partners. This DAT initiative accompanies a new goal to have 8% of the population in Ventura County aware and prepared for disasters by the end of 2008.

HOW: Wielding sledge hammers and hard hats, officials and Red Cross volunteers will “Tear Down DAT Wall” to begin expansion of the building that will become the new hub for disaster preparedness and response in Ventura County.

RSVP: Media is invited to attend and cover event. Please RVSP to 800-600-7111 x 221
